Oral health offers an explanation about our overall health. Mouth, teeth and gums can affect our general health badly. Studies suggest that oral bacteria and inflammation are associated with a severe form of gum disease (periodontitis) that might play a role in some diseases including, endocarditis, Cardiovascular diseases leading to clogged arteries and stroke, Pregnancy and birth complications, Pneumonia and other respiratory diseases.
There are two common Periodontal diseases. The first is gingivitis, which is described as inflammation of the gingiva in which the connective tissue attachment to the tooth remains at its original level. The second is periodontitis, which is an inflammation of the supporting tissues of the teeth with progressive attachment loss and bone destruction.
Chronic inflammation causes Periodontitis in response to a disease-associated multispecies bacterial infection in the subgingival region. Although the inflammatory processes occur locally in the oral cavity, several studies have determined that inflammatory proteins called cytokines produced during periodontitis, as well as subgingival species and bacterial components, can spread from the oral cavity, contributing therefore, to various extraoral diseases like cancer.
Strong scientific reports have shown a high susceptibility to Periodontitis in relation to systemic inflammatory diseases. Cytokine-targeted therapies exert potential effects during treatment. Periodontal host immunity and the Cytokine networking are considered future therapies to be identified.
Proinflammatory pathways are activated either by mono- or polymicrobial infections, resulting in an increase in the expression of inflammatory mediators such as IL-6, IL-8, IL-1β, and TNF-α.
